The Black Queen
The Black Queen is a sonic meditation and theatrical experience co-created with Jennifer Beattie and Adam Marks employing the tools of technology, classical music, folk melodies, contemporary poetry, and historical exploration to tell the story of Barbora of Celje, Queen of the Holy Roman Empire in the early 1400s. She was a shrewd businesswoman and a compassionate guardian of justice. In partnership with a trusting and loving husband, King Sigismund of Luxembourg, she became the most powerful queen of her time. As Sigismund was dying, a rumor campaign was created to destroy her reputation and rob her of her powers. Even the pope helped in spreading stories of her as a heretic, a whore, and a witch. When her husband died, she was arrested and exiled. After her death she lived on only as an evil myth, The Black Queen. This project resurrects her as the badass she truly was.
